What is NPC? What role do NPCs play in the game?

What does NPC mean?
NPC stands for "Non-Player Character" a concept used to refer to any character in the game that is not controlled by the player. NPCs will often be pre-programmed by game developers with actions and gestures to communicate with or interact with players when the player talks to them.
NPCs can affect gameplay or not, depending on what they are pre-programmed for. A non-playable character (NPC) is a video game character controlled by the game's artificial intelligence (AI) and not by a gamer.
A non-player character depicts the character interacting with the player during the match. Interactions cover the gamut from conspiratorial conversation to the regular trade to get the next best sword. NPCs do not include enemy units, as blasting, slashing, bombing, and sniping are not really interactive in any sense. In general, NPCs are characters controlled by the game itself. They are generally friendly—or at least not overtly hostile—to gamer-controllable characters.
Roles of NPC in the game
Depending on the plot and gameplay design of each game, NPC involvement in it can be quite varied and significant. The following are some of the main NPC roles in the game:
• Secondary characters: During the main quest, NPCs are regularly deployed to assist players. For example, in a role-playing game, an NPC can be someone who provides jobs, information, hints, tools, weapons, or combat support to the player.
• Trade characters: NPCs in the game are often used to trade goods or receive side quests for cash. For example, an NPC in an adventure game could be a merchandise store, an employer who wants players to work for them, or an individual with whom the player can trade goods.
• NPC enemies are often used in the game to make it difficult for the player. For example, in a strategy game, an NPC can be a hostile creature or army that the player needs to defeat in order to level up or complete a goal.
• Supporting characters: NPCs are often used to make the gaming environment more vivid. For example, in a simulation game, NPCs can represent city dwellers, store employees, or even just animals that live in the forest. While they may not significantly affect gameplay, these NPCs add to the game's appeal and realism.
